Spirits of the Forest is an abstract set collection game by Thundergryph Games. One to four players take on the roles of elements competing to acquire the most spirt symbols of each of the nine available. The game is played by laying out the 48 tiles in a 4 by 12 grid and taking turns acquiring tiles from the outside in. Players may either take a single tile with two symbols on it or two tiles each with one of the same spirit symbol. The game ends when all the tiles are taken, and the scores are calculated based upon who has the most of each spirit symbol.
The artwork in Spirits of the Forest is absolutely stunning. The gameplay is simple, but the strategy can be as complex as you make it. Thundergryph Games specialises in offering deluxe editions of their games as Kickstarter exclusives. The deluxe edition of Spirits of the Forest upgrades the cardboard tiles to wood and the small plastic gemstones to chunky stones similar to those in Tsuro. The retail edition is available for €12 plus shipping and comes in a wonderfully small box. The deluxe edition costs €30 plus shipping and comes in a box that still comfortably fits in a small bag, but the quality increase is well worth the increase in size and price. There is also a Collector's edition for €70 plus shipping for those with more disposable income than myself.
